Kidnapped. By Robert Louis Stevenson. Illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. Illustrated Edition, Later buying Printing. Scribners. New York, 1925.
Adored Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson composed some of the best adventure novels of all.
Adored Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson composed some of the best adventure novels of all time, including Treasure Island and Kidnapped. His gothic fiction, including Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is also widely regarded. He was a celebrity in his lifetime and remains one of the most widely read authors from the Victorian era. In Kidnapped, Stevenson weaves together adventure and history through the narration of David Balfour, a teenage orphan who is unwittingly placed aboard a cargo ship by his treacherous uncle Ebenezer. Told in the wake of the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the novel is not just an adventure narrative, but also a glimpse into the political history of Scotland. This 1925 buying edition contains N.C. Wyeth's iconic full-page illustrations. These illustrations are some of the best examples of N.C. Wyeth's artistic genius. A member of the Brandywine School and arguably Howard Pyle's best pupil, Wyeth illustrated dozens of children's classics. He is also the father of Andrew Wyeth, an equally brilliant painter who made a lasting mark on American arts.
This illustrated edition, later printing is in very good condition. In the original full cloth boards with illustrated pastedown to front board, very good with only minor rubbing and spots. Text block near fine. All of Wyeth's full-page color plates present. Foldout map of Scotland present. Illustrated endpapers. Deckled fore edge. Without the scarce original dust jacket.
A terrific volume containing some of N.C. Wyeth's best work.
