Lace Agate from Mexico has been a popular lapidary material for decades. Iron and aluminum within the agate come together to form wonderful and artistic lace patterns. There are a number of deposits of Lace Agate hailing from Durango and Chihuahua Mexico. The agate rests within limestone formations suggesting that perhaps its origins are marine in nature. We were fortunate to acquire some very old stock Mexican Lace Agate - mined in the 1940s so the story goes - exhibiting extremely bright colors and wonderful patterns. This variety of Lace Agate seems to differ quite substantially from the mainstream variety available for sale today.
Let's talk about the rock. It is a free form triangular cabochon featuring a nice pocket of agate containing purple starbursts surrounded by vibrant red and white banding. I haven't seen many like this! It would serve well as the focal point in a custom pendant. It measures approximately 5 cm x 4.5 cm at its widest points buying and is 5 mm thick. There is a 3 mm square bezel to help with setting in a custom piece of jewellery. There is a very small druzy pocket on the tip of the triangle and I did seal a natural opening in the top right. If you deem these imperfections they are minor and don't stand out. The back has been sanded clean.
