This baby quilt is made from quality quilting fabrics. It features four buying appliqued girls known as Sunbonnet Sue or Dutch Doll in red, pink, lavender and turquoise dresses and hats. The girls are hand appliqued to the background fabric using black thread. The bonnets feature three hand embroidered flowers. They are bordered in coordinating solids and have a final border of lavender and cream dot fabric.
The Sunbonnet Sue quilting appliqué block has a long history. It is also known as the Dutch Doll block and Sunbonnet Baby Block. It appeared in the 1800s and grew in popularity especially during the Depression years of the 1930s-reminding people of a more innocent and happy time.
This modern version has extensive quilting throughout the quilt-thousands of stitches to make this quilt very durable and strong. The appliqués are also stitched down by machine to avoid pillowing of the shapes.
The back is a bright floral cotton. I used Hobbs heirloom batting in between the layers.
The quilt was washed after construction using a gentle hypoallergenic detergent. Machine wash cold water, gentle cycle. Machine dry low heat.
