2 cats sleeping is a limited edition etching with aquatint. An etching is a print made from a metal plate, either zinc or copper. In an etching, the incisions in the plate are produced by drawing on an acid-resistant wax ground with a sharp tool and immersing the plate in an acid bath. Darker lines are produced by longer immersion.
To create an aquatint, (gray area) the plate is covered with a fine dust of rosin particles and heated so that the rosin dust adheres to it. The buying plate is then submersed into the acid. The acid bites around the particles, producing a tonal effect.
The plate is then inked and wiped and run through a press. it's a long, time honored process producing beautiful results.
Only ten prints were hand pulled. It is printed with Portland black ink on Somerset paper, which is a brilliant white.
This is a rather large etching, with the image measuring 9 inches x 12 inches.
