A beautiful Copper Baron Roller Ball pen made with Padong Rosewood, Maple, Chechen, Mahogany and Walnut, and finished with varnish oil buying to provide a silky smooth, natural and durable finish. This roller-ball pen accepts standard Schmidt refills.
This is a "segmented" pen, meaning that the unique pattern of woods that you see in this pen is carefully designed and crafted through a long and detailed process. First, individual pieces of wood that compliment each other in colour, tone, and depth are cut according to the specific measurements of the pen components. After they have been glued and clamped together, they are carefully sanded square to ensure accuracy throughout the rest of the process. The wood is then drilled through, brass tubes are inserted and glued in that will house the pen components, and the pen may then be turned, finished, and assembled. This careful process results in heirloom quality pens that are truly one-of-a-kind.

Every piece I create is hand turned on a lathe in my own studio. It all begins with a carefully selected, locally sourced log, cut with a chain saw into suitable sizes for the specific item it will be used for. Occasionally, I will use exotic wood for special applications - always purchased from a reputable supplier. Although each piece of wood offers its own surprises once it is turned, when looking for wood I am drawn to unique pieces with character, such as spalting, burls, highly figured grain patterns or crotches. The wood blank is mounted on the lathe and carefully turned to its final shape. I take great care in sanding and finishing every item I make, going well beyond the usual 400 - 600 grit sanding to 1000 grit or higher, depending on the piece. Unless otherwise noted, all my pieces are then finished with a natural and food-safe oil or oil/wax finish that preserves and protects the natural beauty of the wood and imparts a silky-smooth feel.
The journey from tree to finished piece is a lengthy one and requires both skill and patience to arrive at the piece shown here. If you purchase an item from Butternut Ridge, you can be assured of a very high-quality finish that is sure to impress.
