Phulkari : The Art Of Phulkari Is A Hand Embroidery Style Traditionally Practiced By Rural Womenfolk In East Punjab (India) And West Punjab Now In Pakistan. Phulkari Literally Means ‘Flower Making' And Was At One Time Used For Word Embroidery. Phulkari Is Invariably Embroidered On Home Spun Locally Woven And Dyed Khaddar Because Of Its Ready Availability At Low Cost. At Times Finer Variety Of Khaddar Called Halwan Was Also Used But It Required Much More Labor. Khaddar Is Used As Base Fabric Is That Phulkari Involves Counting Of Threads And It Was East To Count On Khaddar. Soft, Untwisted Floss Silk Yarn Called ‘Pat' buying Was Used For Embroidering Phulkari It Is Fluffy To Touch And Clings To Fingers. Phulkari Extensively Use Short And Long Darning Stitch Over Counted Threads To Produce Geometrical Patterns. Embroidery Is Done From Wrong Side Of Cloth With A Stitch Length Of About ½ Cm. Other Stitches Were Also Used At Times. E,G. Satin Stitch, Chain Stitch, Running Stitch, Stem Stitch, Herringbone Stitch Etc. A Single Phulkari Sari Can Take As Many As 4-5 Days.
