Emilie Louise Michel (1909-1996) was born in Tacoma, Washington. She lived and received her preparatory education in Manchuria, Latvia, China, and Switzerland. She graduated from Reed college in 1930 and earned her bachelors degree at the University of Washington in 1936. Between 1930 and 1933 she taught at La Pelouse in Bex, Switzerland.

Charlotte Heaton-Sessions (1909-1993) was born in Bellingham, Washington and earned her bachelors degree at Reed College in 1932.
