I made this box in the kurinuki technique. It is a Japanese method of hand forming which involves using a solid block of clay and carving the exterior form and hollowing out the interior. This is a more sculptural way of working with clay but translates beautifully to functional ware. The best part of it is that each kurinuki item is unique and can never be recreated.

It can be a perfect present, especially when filled with jewellery items like earrings, rings or pendants. It might be exposed on a chest of drawers, a coffee table or any small piece of furniture.
Firing in raku kiln. I used few colorful glazes. Parts without glaze are black.
Height: 9 cm (3.54")
Diameter: about 8 cm (3.15")

About Raku:
When the kiln reaches 1850 F degrees, the red hot pieces are removed from the kiln and placed into a barrel of paper, straw, sawdust which instantly ignites. The barrel is then tightly covered and the work is allowed to smoke for a duration.
Raku is so trans-formative. The glaze looks like copper with green-blue patina highlights as well as many other colours. Truly painted by fire and smoke. The crackles are part of the rustic raku surface and not defective.
