This delightful 21 piece tea set by Colclough is in pattern number 6791, known as Stardust. It is one of the lesser known patterns from Colclough, not produced for as long as their other lines therefore quite rare to find. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, and apart from some wear to the gilt around the rim of some of the cups (see photo) it is fabulous. The cups have a wavy edge in the typical Colcough shape, and the handles are beautifully elegant. One of the cups is a replacement and is slightly larger than the others without the wavy edged rim (see photo), but this doesn't detract from the beauty of this very elegant set.
Founded in 1890 by Herbert Joseph Colclough, an ex-Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, he was granted a royal license to produce Royal Vale china in 1913 after a visit from King George V and Queen Mary. In 1937 the businesses of H J Colclough, Thomas Morris and Osborne China Co. were combined and became Colclough China Ltd. Due to the reputation that the company created for itself, buying the name was used by successive companies well into the 1970s, at which time Colclough became a part of the Royal Doulton Family. This pattern was, I believe, manufactured between 1955 and 1964
