Hand painted pure silk scarf, echoing wild and unpredictable Irish landscapes. I tried to convey hope in this bold painting, in which an indigo silhouette flies a kite over a crimson hill. I used water droplets to give texture to the hillside, and outlined the details in shining gold gutta. Salt patterns suggest powerful gusts of wind sweeping across the teal sky.
Every scarf I create is a one off unique work of art, hand painted by me, Martha, in Glenflesk, Ireland. They are painted freehand, one at a time, and with no stencils or aids. I do not sell any printed or mass produced scarves. Small imperfections in shape and pattern are just a part of the hand painting process that makes each scarf original and unrepeatable. The item you see in the listing is the one you are purchasing, and the only one that exists!

A little bit about me:
I live in Glenflesk valley in the far West of Ireland. The weather here is constantly changing, and my scarves are often inspired by that moment when a different type of light hits the landscape, and lets you see the mountains, woodlands, bogs and coastline in a new way.
I also take inspiration from activities I do outdoors – whether it's tree climbing, snorkelling, kayaking, kite-flying, berry-picking or just sitting by a campfire. I enjoy experimenting with fun and quirky designs too, and get inspired by anything from distant cosmic phenomena to the kitchen spice rack!
I am self-taught in silk painting. I mix the colours as I go, and one of my favourite techniques involves using salt, which creates intricate patterns as the paint dries. These patterns change depending on paint concentration, and can look like anything from feathers to stars, from fireworks to raindrops.
I like to experiment, and have been known to try fairly drastic things like flicking water droplets over my finished design, letting the buying wind blow my salt about, or tipping up a scarf to let the colours trickle down! Silk paint is always a bit magical and unpredictable, and the results are often surprising, even to me.
My scarves are 100% Ponge silk, which is a very soft, floaty, fine lightweight silk. My aim is to ensure complete diversity in my artwork, and create something that might make you feel happy and calm as you wear it and go about your day.
