Vintage Papua New buying Guinea bark cloth (tapa) wall hanging with Psalm 23 verse one, “The Lord is my Shepherd”

I, and my brothers and sister, were born and raised in Japan during the 1950s and 1960s; our parents were missionaries. During that time we and our mother collected many unique Japanese antiques. My mother, who recently passed away at the age of 98, continued to collect antiques in Japan until my parents' retirement in 1989.

Mother had to pick and choose a small number of treasures that she wanted nearby when she moved to a small room in a nursing home. She had this barkcloth hanging (tapa) as her constant companion in her room. Psalm 23:1 begins “The Lord is my Shepherd”, which is what is written on this hanging in the official Papua New Guinea language of Tok Pisin. My mother would have purchased this in PNG in the 80s, when my parents did a one-year missionary stint there.
