These are an exquisite pair of turquoise inlay hoop earrings artisan crafted in Taxco, Mexico sometime in the early 1980s.
The design is authentic, and is executed perfectly. The earrings feature wide sterling silver hoops finished by ear-wires accented buying by polished half spheres. The hoops display beautiful Mexican artistry incorporating crushed turquoise inlay set in a dramatic Aztec pattern. This pattern enhances the elemental quality of the design and draws the eye to these exotic earrings.
The presentation is purely vintage Mexican, traditional with a tribal touch.
The earrings are in magnificent vintage condition. Larger, they have a significant drop of 2.10” from the top of the ear-wire. They are also hallmarked with 925 (Sterling Silver) and Mexico. The makers mark is B-55 which indicates the silversmith who crafted these earrings was the 55th silversmith to register his craft. The letter B is the first initial of his last name. Normally the initial of the town where the silversmith worked would come before his name however this is not the case with these earrings so it is assumed they were crafted in Taxco.
About the Aztecs:
The Spanish campaign against the Aztec Empire had its final victory on August 13, 1521, when a coalition army of Spanish forces and native Tlaxcalan warriors led by Cortés and Xicotencatl the Younger captured the emperor Cuauhtemoc and Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire. This marked the end of the most fascinating ancient culture in the Americas.
Their unique artistic style however, continues to have an influence on design not only in the Mexican and South American realm but internationally.
