Zane Grey was without a doubt the greatest American West storyteller. He was born on January 31, 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio, and for most of his teens through his 30's had at least one novel in the top ten every year.

The breakthrough success of Heritage of the Desert in 1910 enabled him to establish a home in Altadena, California and a hunting lodge on the Mogollon Rim near Payson, Arizona.

He spent several months each year gathering experiences and adventures; whether it was on “safari” in the wilds of Colorado or deep sea fishing in Tahiti, he would spend the rest of the year writing tales for serialization, magazine articles or the annual novel.

His untimely death on October 23, 1939 left the world with many posthumous works that were finally published. He left us with almost 90 books; 60 westerns, 9 about fishing and 3 trace the fate of the Ohio Zanes, the rest were short stories, a biography of the young George Washington, juvenile fiction and baseball stories. Readers of Zane Grey today will feel the spell of adventure, character, natural beauty and uniquely American idealism cast over them, as the readers of a half century ago did.
