Original and antique Scottish clan or plaid badge measuring 5 x 4.5cm. Badges such as these would have been used to secure the tartan around the shoulders and on display on the chest. The belt encircling the heraldic symbols is typical of Scottish clan crests and it bears the inscription 'PRO MITRA CORONAM' meaning a crown for a mitre and is the motto of the Sharp or Sharpe family, in particular it relates to an episode in 1679 notably the assassination of Archbishop James Sharp. This item is very old and hand made, an impressive and rare momento which clearly pre dates other buying clan badges and so is therefore likely to have been an earlier family version, possibly a model design for later clan crests. It is estimated to be 200 years old, or older.
This item will be supplied gift boxed.
