This Victorian brooch is beautifully crafted from sterling silver and Scottish Agate pebbles. This kilt pin is to help protect the mystery of what lies under the kilt with buying this Late Victorian or Early Edwardian kilt pin.
The kilt pin is usually worn on the lower corner of the outer apron of a kilt. Its function is to prevent the apron falling or blowing open, by adding weight to the outer apron. It does not pin the outer apron to the inner fabric, which is a common misconception.
The custom of wearing a pin came in during Queen Victoria's reign to stop the kilt apron flapping about too much and showing more of the wearer's anatomy than the Queen liked. The story goes that the Queen gave her own brooch to a soldier who was struggling with his kilt in windy conditions. Queen Victoria brought in rules stating that all military kilts must have a fastening.
This pin is set with beautiful agate and set in an a hand engraved brooch. The engraving has lovely fan engraving, with one corner having a unique diamond pattern.
Unfortunately this brooch is not hallmarked but it is a lovely Victorian brooch. It has a "C" clasp which is typical of the period.
