Dioscoreas are waking up right now.

Description:
Dioscorea elephantipes, native to the dry interior of South Africa, aka Elephant's Foot, is a slow-growing and long-living succulent with tuber above ground level covered with layers of corky bark. The caudex can grow up to six feet in nature, resembling an elephant's foot. The stems grow in a climbing fashion. The leaves are heart-shaped. The flowers are dioecious, with male or female occurring on separate plants. They are pale greenish-yellow and normally appear in the winter. Male flowers are erect with spiny racemens. Female flowers are in spinescent, spreading spikes. The roots aren't deep, so plant it in a shallow pot filled with porous, well-drained potting soil. Water the plant around the edges of the pot and not directly on the tuber. Allow the soil to buying become nearly dry before watering again. Withhold fertilizer and water sparingly during the plant's dormant period when the vines turn yellow and die back. The plant often go dormant during the summer, but there is no set pattern or time schedule. If the vine dries up completely during dormancy, move the plant to a cool place and withhold water completely for about two weeks, then return it to the sunny location and resume normal care.
