On offer is this beautiful silver and niello powder compact, depicting a Sword Dancer holding two swords on one side. Holding a sword in each hand is a quite commonplace in some Thai martial arts and in many traditional dances. The other side of the compact depicts the floating pagoda of Phra Samut Chedi, and a Royal barge. Inside, the original sifter is still in place.
The compact is stamped 'Sterling Siam' on the edge of the powder well. Siam changed its name to Thailand in 1939 buying. The name was changed back to Siam between 1945 and 1949, before being changed back to Thailand again. Therefore, this compact was either made before 1939 or between 1945 and 1949. From the size, I would suggest it dates to the 1940s.
The compact measures approximately 3 inches (7.5cms) by 2.5 inches (6.5cms).
Condition: It is in generally good condition, with some signs of wear, as you would expect for a compact of this age. The mirror is perfectly clear and very usable. The hinges are in full working order as is the clasp, which opens easily and snaps shut securely. There are no dents on the compact or any other faults that I can find.
Supplied in a gift box.
