One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca is to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountain Sierras three hours from buying Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. One of the most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. David Blas is probably the best known of the Blas Family of carvers, and his two sons Jose and David Adrian are active in carving as well. We love the sense of humor and whimsy in his work!
This river snail is packed with a sense of whimsy and joy! The shell is carved out with wonderful ridges that provide a great textural appeal to the piece and adds another layer of both difficulty and charm to the piece. The painting of this piece is wonderfully done with lots of detail, and we love those big eyes! The snail is signed by the artist. The antennae and the shell are removable from the long body for safe shipping.
