Product code: Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver buying Claw Foot Sugar Tongs. 1901. Antique Sugar Nips.

Beautifully crafted in solid Sterling Silver by the Birmingham silversmiths Levi & Salaman in 1901.
Ornately embossed with the head of what could be Zeus with a flowing beard (or any other mythological being) the sugar nips end with finely detailed sharp claw feet, all the better for grasping the sugar lumps!
At each side of the tongs just above the mans head are small cartouches with perhaps one of two purposes.. the first maybe so that one's fingers fall on the unembossed silver and therefore do not rub away any of the raised surfaces, the second perhaps for personalising the nips with engraved initials.. the choice is there.

The top of the tongs show some signs of surface wear as shown in the photos, otherwise these are in wonderful antique condition and would grace any tea tray!

The nips are 10cm in length, the width 1.2cm at its top tapering down to 3.8mm just above the claws. They weigh 19.3 grams. buying
