A beautiful Japanese Kokeshi doll, of Tsugaru style, by Junichi Sasamori.

This doll is graciously decorated with traditional Ainu (indigenous people of Japan) patterns on the neck and lower body, a large Peony flower (taken from the crest of the Tsugaru daimyô), and Okappa hairstyle.
The artist painted circular multicolor rokuru lines while the body was still on the lathe.



Tsugaru is the youngest of all the traditional strains, established by the artist Hidetaro Mori, who added a new style to the local Kokeshi around 1914 after adults took an interest in buying more Kokeshi as souvenirs in relation to the Nebuta festival and hot spring tourism.
