This beautiful crystal vase is decorated with a hand-cut pattern of diamonds. The glass is perfectly clear and sparkles when polished. The base of the vase has been faintly etched with the 'Grimwade' mark which shows that the vase was manufactured in Sydney, Australia by the Crown Crystal Glass Company and sold as their 'Grimwade Crystal' range.
The Crown Crystal Glass Company was formed in Sydney in 1926 with the merging of Australian Glass Manufacturers' Crown Glass Works and Crystal Glass Limited into one larger company. At the time the Crown Crystal Glass Company was the only company in Australia manufacturing pressed glassware and would remain so until the 1970s.
At the start of the 1930s Crown Crystal began making hand-cut crystal at two separate sites in Sydney and these were marketed as 'Grimwade Crystal' and 'Wyndham Crystal'. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 the crystal manufacturing plants were closed, so Grimwade crystal was only made for a short period during the 1930s making surviving examples quite rare.
This style of vase is shown in the 1934 Grimwade's catalogue, however the cut pattern is slightly different from the examples shown.
