Pukka Shell Necklace Carved Mother of Pearl Bird Pendant Vintage Hawaii
ITEM: A beautiful necklace from Hawaii featuring classic pukka shells with a large, carved shell bird focal piece. The carved shell has a look of mother of pearl with its lustrous, pearlescent glow. With outstretched wings, the bird has a dynamic design style that really elevates the whole look of the piece. The white pukka shells are interspersed with blackened versions and golden brass spacer beads that add an almost geometric design element. The look is very much one of a casual elegance. A drinks at the beach soirée or even an ocean side wedding. The lustrous pearlescent shell really dresses it up quite a bit. These pukka shells are larger diameter than many. Thicker too. The necklace has a barrel clasp typical of the era. This is a very attractive necklace in a style of design that speaks for the era in which it was created. Pukka she'll jewelry was almost a must have item back in the day. The tiny, disc shaped shells nearly picked out of existence. I believe that they are only found in the Hawaiian Islands to South Pacific Islands but could have that wrong. (I was wrong…once) lol But I digress. These shell necklaces and chokers were surfer boy chic - whether worn by girl or boy. That they are making a comeback is really no surprise since everything recycles and becomes “it” again in fashions! What your looking for are the evenly spaced shells of similar diameter, clean edged and complete. Size may descend with larger shells at front and smaller shells at either side or end. Uniformity of color can make a difference in overall look however you don't want bleached. Sun bleached, yes. Chemical bleach, no. A few may be dyed for patterning. And when it comes to pukka, size does matter! Larger shells command greater prices and are more desirable due to the fact they are older - or were older when shed. As the craze took off, the larger shells were harder to source and smaller, flatter, more uneven versions were used. This beautiful necklace is right in the pocket - a Goldilocks of sorts - neither overly large nor particularly small. They are quite even along edges and show the desirable traits of fit, diameter, color and type. The addition of that beautiful carved shell bird, wings outstretched, playful yet powerful. A totem or fetish of sorts. All in all, this is a top notch representation of the type and style and with that little something extra to add to the look. Very nice indeed!
SIZE: Measuring just a hair shy of 18”, this eye catching necklace has two strands beaded measuring 8” each that attach to the carved shell bird, which is just a hair shy of 2” side to side. It's about the same measurement tall as it is wide.
CONDITION: In good vintage condition showing minimal wear overall. I see no missing shells, no broken shells, chips cracks or crazing. Well beaded with good tension - neither too tight nor too loose. I see each shell abutting the next in buying an even manner. The carved shell bird shows little to no wear. Rich and lustrous, I see no damage to note. No dull areas, no loss of surface tones, no flaking or peeling, cracks or crazing noted. Strung on the typical kind of material for the era, fish line or gut, I see no areas of fraying or looseness. The brass beads and barrel clasp show no rust or verdigris. That clasp is intact and functional. A very pretty version of this type and style of design.
