This vase is extremely well executed. I just wish the signature was also. I have been searching fervently to find the artist responsible for this but have failed miserably. It's time to put it up.
The symmetry of this vase is amazing as well as the technique. I can find no seams or turn marks or any clue as to how this was made. Even on the base there is no evidence, not even a drip of glaze that is out of place. The bottom is the only place where it is unglazed. I can feel no undulation of the surface and the roundness of the lip and the base buying are remarkable. The uniform thickness of the clay throughout the entire piece blows me away.
How did they keep the lip from sagging? You almost always see a flared lip or a plain lip on ceramic pieces but this is something I haven't seen before on a hand made piece. It's almost as if it was blown into a mold and spun to remove the seams. If it was machine made, why sign it and why aren't there more of them? This is top of the line pro stuff.
I felt certain that a piece of this quality would have been made by a known artist. Maybe it is and I just can't decipher the signature.
The inside of the vase and the base are a mauve color and the outside is black with a speckled decoration of mauve and white. There are no drips or mistakes anywhere. It is signed underneath on the inside of the base.
It is in perfect condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. It measures 9 1/4" tall, 3 1/4" outer diameter of the lip, about 2" inner diameter, about 4 5/8" outer diameter of the base and about 3" inner diameter.
For the ceramics enthusiast, this is a perfect gift. To the ceramics maker, a benchmark. A truly amazing piece.
