Charming antique doll made in Japan, circa 1910. (The date is what was specified by the Valley Doll Museum from which this doll was acquired). The back of the head is marked RE inside a diamond shape, and Nippon underneath. This symbol is encountered on Japanese made dolls of the era, but has never been conclusively attributed to a particular maker. Her body is of leather and is jointed, with hands of bisque. The leather body is in decent condition, though it appears that the arms were reattached by sewing which is not done the best way. The stitching on the feet shows a fair amount of wear.
She has an open mouth with little teeth showing. There is some very minor paint loss on her face, such as the corner of her mouth. Her eyes are brown glass and fixed and eyelashes painted. The cheeks are full (chubby baby style) and rosy which gives the doll a baby fresh appearance. Her reddish brown hair is likely original and fairly fuzzy, but still looks nice. She is wearing a handmade dress. This girl would be a great addition to any antique doll collection.
