Ammonites are one of the most famous types of fossil, and have been valued throughout history. They were given their name in ancient Greece where they were called "Horns of Ammon" after the curling ram's horns on traditional Greek depictions of the Egyptian god Amun. Their curling form is actually the multi-chambered shell which once housed an ancient cephalopod, close relatives to squids and octopi. These creatures dominated the seas for millions of years, but quickly went extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs.
This pendant has a nicely preserved ammonite still in its limestone matrix, a rich brown stone which complements the white shell. The entire piece has been cut as a cabochon with a freeform teardrop shape. The fossil is preserved in beautiful detail with complete shell sections and suture patterning. This one also has a cool effect where some of the sutures are naturally colored black, giving it some striking contrast.
