These vintage statues are handmade with papier maché by skilled artisans in Xalisco.
These vintage statues are handmade with papier maché by skilled artisans in Xalisco, Mexico. The folk artists of the small town in Mexico created these figures of elderly women and a mustached man, all in traditional clothing, hard at work, carrying jugs. The paper mache is crafted in great detail and has a coating that makes it hard. The entire body seems to be made of paper, except for the jugs which are actual ceramic, and the faces which seem to be hand crafted with a different material, perhaps composite clay or lacquered wood. The faces are hand painted with intricate details that make the old woman and man characters come to life. Because of the handmade nature of paper mache, each one has a unique character. They stand on a block of wood as the base, perfect for displaying in your home or office as a work of art that will surely be a conversation piece. A lovely gift for mom, grandma, or anyone who appreciates handmade and Mexican art.
