Abandoned Fort, Fort Union Jail, Fine Art Photo, Military buying History, Southwest, Santa Fe Trail, 12 x 16 Matted Photo, Old West, Gifts for Men
Originally built in 1851 to protect the Santa Fe Trail.
Originally built in 1851 to protect the Santa Fe Trail, Fort Union stood in the middle of a vast valley of prairie grass nearly 100 miles from Santa Fe (built far away to keep the soldiers from the temptations of Santa Fe . . .). Vast and sprawling, its adobe walls housed over 1,600 men at its peak strength. Over the years, a series of 3 forts was built (one of which was involved in a Confederate battle). Today, the melted adobe walls stand in lonely ruins on the vast high plains of Northeastern New Mexico.
On this August day, an intense, towering storm was building. This close-up of Fort Union's jail beneath the increasingly-threatening sky struck me as the visual definition of vulnerability.
A powerful, striking image -- perfect for enthusiasts of Southwest/New Mexico history, old forts, military history.
