My story...
I am a rather splendid, beautifully aged antique edition of Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore published by Collins Free-type press. I am undated but my title page is reminiscent of the Collin's books of the 1920s era. I buying am in extraordinarily, wonderful condition for my approximate 100 years of age.
I want to assure you that I am made of real leather - you will see and feel this when it arrives. My book is soft not hard like the later Collin's editions with the cherub on their spines that are so often advertised as leather, but in fact are limp leather look cloth which feels hard and inflexible.
Practicalities:
-I measure H 15.5cm W 10cm.
-I weigh 212g
Condition Summary:
I am in very good vintage condition generally. I do have some noticeable wear on my cover - inside wear is more minor. For specific condition points see below.
Why buy me?
I ooze vintage charm! My volume is bound in a full, dark brandy, pebble-grained, soft leather. The leather covers are really in lovely condition with only slight wear - they feel soft, and good to hold.
Next, see how my spine is ornately tooled and decorated with titles and my author's name and publisher in gold gilt. The gilt ornamentation on the spine is sparkly bright as when new.
My top text block/page edges are also ornamented with gilt and my endpapers - in marvellous condition and not inscribed - are printed in a deep contrasting purple.
I have a beautiful, classic black and white frontispiece illustration set opposite an elaborately decorated title page.
However my big surprise are the multitude of other illustrations and photographs within me - a mixture of 6 evocative further black and white paintings by Wilmot Lunt and 8 beautiful photograph print scenes from the real Doone countryside of North Devon.
You will find my reading pages clean and tightly bound. There is no foxing.
As I am around 100 years old I will have some signs of age and use, but very little.
Hardcover: quite worn on spine ends and just gently worn on corners and extreme book edges: three small scuffs and a long scratch to the rear leather; the spine leather is more faded.
Page edges: Top gold gilt edge faded and rubbed; other edges tanned with minor faint foxing marks.
Reading pages: just generally gently aged more so around their edges with three gently creased top page corners in a succession.
Binding: very strong - gutters intact each end of the book.
A note from my seller:
A really, gorgeous highly collectible edition - a gorgeous find with the dramatic paintings and delightful old photographs.
