This is a rare ‘Long Tom’ engineering club or sledge.
This is a rare ‘Long Tom' engineering club or sledge hammer dating to the early 1930s.
It was produced by J.W. Pickavant & Co. of Burntwood in the West Midlands, who became Sykes-Pickavant around 1968.
It was owned by an engineer who worked at the Railway Engine Building & Maintenance workshops here in York. He inherited it from his father & when the handle broke in the late 1970s, he wrote to the company & they sent him a new one for free. Those were the days!
The head is solid cast carbon tool steel with chamfered edges & 3cm octagonal faces. About 18cm or 7” long.
3 1/2lb head weight & 3lb 13oz or about 1.73kg including the handle. 31.5cm long.
Stamped Sykes-Pickavant, Hickory on the handle.
It's in superb vintage condition & fully usable. No chips or cracks & the head is solidly wedged with no movement. Slight burring to one buying face as shown. Please have a good look at all the photos.
