A platinum find!
This antique 11.5-inch / 29 cm platter by Johnson Brothers is in the Queen's Bouquet pattern, crafted to replicate the bouquet presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I when she arrived in Canada in 1939. The Old English-style platter has a floral centre with purple, pink, blue, burgundy and yellow blooms -- and a lovely rope border, finished with a glistening gilt edge.
I have two platters -- SOLD SEPARATELY -- so I've added photos of them together to show they are identical in excellent vintage condition. Shipping will be combined and overages refunded on the pair
Measures:
11 1/2" (29 cm) long
9" (23 cm) wide
3/4" (2 cm) deep
Backstamp: Johnson Bros. Old English Made in England with Crown hallmark (all in Blue)
Also, in pink: "Queens Bouquet - a replica of a buying bouquet presented to H.M. Queen Elizabeth during the Royal visit to Canada 1939"
The condition is absolutely pristine! Well loved and never used. This would be a wonderful gift for a royal fan, or someone who loves Canadian history. It would look amazing at the centre of a wall of plates, or anchoring your next gathering.
The Queen and her husband King George VI sailed to North America on the Empress of Australia, arriving on May 17, 1939. They arrived in at Wolfe's Cove in Quebec City to shouts of "vive le roe" and "vive la Reine". Prime Minister Mackenzie King and Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessi greeted the royals. Canadian newspapers reported the "slow, deliberate" style of the King's speech which we know now was his technique to harness his stammer.
Frankly, it's a big deal. It was the first visit by a reigning sovereign to the Dominion of Canada! (And also the first visit of to the U.S., as the royals headed south on an invitation by President Roosevelt which pitched a side trip since they were so close to Washington.)
