This is an exquisite textured ice & dew drop sculptural art glass pedestal bowl designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala from the Ultima Thule line in Finland circa 1970s.
Tapio Wirkkla is a genius designer/artist of many materials including metalwork, plastics and glass blowing. His most iconic designs include the Finlandia Vodka bottle as well as his line Ultima Thule (the highest attainable degree or furthest point of a journey) which includes this piece. The design is meant to invoke the melting ice to dew drops of Lapland, Finlands northernmost point. I think this piece could also represent Ultima Thule as a quest for perfection which can be metaphorically understood as “the highest attainable degree” of any worthy endeavor. In my humble opinion, this piece is as close to perfection as it gets, I'll let the photos speak for themselves. It measures: buying 8 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. Original red Iittala sticker intact. No damage. Gorgeous wedding gift.
