Robert Burns (1759-1796) was active in the second half of the eighteenth century, and is widely celebrated as being the national poet of Scotland, writing primarily in English using a Scots dialect, and a pioneer of the Romantic movement. He penned the lyrics to 'Auld Lang Syne', the popular ditty sung on New Year's Eve. He influenced many later Romantic poets, such as Wordsworth, Shelley and Coleridge, and his influence spread as far as the USA and Russia. This volume comprises his poem, 'The Cotter's Saturday Night', first published in 1786 in 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect'. With a decorative pictorial cover. Contains a profuse number of illustrations drawn by F. A. Chapman and engraved by J. Filmer. Condition Report: In the publisher's original full cloth binding.
