In the early 20th century, when these books were written by Thomas, most people lived their lives in and never traveled beyond the borders of the buying US. International travel was only available to the very rich. Lowell Thomas provided in depth looks at stories around the world. He led the way to provide cultural information of different areas of the world. Lowell Thomas' works helped to open the world to the USA.

#1 The movie Lawrence in Arabia was based upon Thomas' book "With Lawrence in Arabia", published in 1924. Thomas met and spent time with Lawrence in Arabia, now the Middle East. 608 pages. It was 1918 in Jerusalem, when the admiring young American scholar and journalist Lowell Thomas first met T.E. Lawrence. He went on to write With Lawrence in Arabia, a book that sparked the Lawrence of Arabia legend and was the basis of the celebrated film. With brilliant narrative verve, Lowell recounts the exploits of the young British agent who managed to weld disparate and warring Arab tribes into a formidable mobile fighting force—a guerilla army that would defeat the Turks in the Arab Revolt, sealing the fate of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East during World War I. On a canvas whose background is the fierce, inhospitable desert and in whose foreground stride the Emir Feisal, King Hussein I of the Hedjaz, the British General Allenby, and the strange, hypnotic figure of Lawrence himself, Thomas paints a vivid portrait of the “modern knight of Arabia.”

Other volumes:

#2 The Wreck of the Dumaru, pub. 1930. This is the true story, w/ photos and wood cuts , of a ship that floundered, the crew in lifeboats. Thomas' subtitle is A Story of Cannibalism in an Open Boat. 271 pages. From the opening chapter, “The wreck of the Dumaru, with its nightmare tragedy, was indeed an episode too dark for this century, the twentieth… It was the ultimate and culminating disaster which might befall those who venture afar upon the waters. Indeed, you might classify the wreck of the Dumaru as a monumental example in a classical tradition.”

#3 This Side of Hell published in 1932. Story of World War I hero, awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, The Distinguished Service Cross and many other medals, not only from the United States, but several other countries. Tells of his heroic exploits and multiple adventures. Illustrations include: Dan's soldierly mug, scars and all–but loaded down with glory and honors, One of Bob Ripley's famous “Believe it or not” cartoons. As hard-boiled an hombre as ever fought cooties in a trench, Phillips was always ready for a knock-down, drag-out fight, Dopey Rich–Dan's buddy, Rice had a longing for feminine company, Short Long, Dan unveiled the memorial to the First Division at Washington, Dan's highest honor–The Congressional Medal of Honor. . 316 pages.

#4 India: The Land of the Black Pagoda, pub. 1930 When Lowell Thomas set out to see India, he did it on the grand scale. Intending to stay about four months, he remained two years. He traveled from the extreme southern tip of India to the slopes of the Himalayas, from the India where there are no British to where John Bull rules supreme-in all, more than sixty thousand miles, through a land of the most amazing contrasts in the world. Thomas offers an invaluable account on mysterious India-giving a detailed look at life in that country, which includes indescribable squalor treading on the heels of unimaginable luxury; profound sanctity rubbing elbows with sensuality beyond belief; wisdom and philosophy hand in hand with hypocrisy and ignorance-the whole spectacle presents one contrast after another.

#5 Pageant of Adventure, pub. 1940 284 pages. From the book: "[This book} is the accumulation of a life-long habit of collecting tales of thrill and peril. For 25 odd years I have been knocking about this globe and telling the news of the world on the radio, I have sought accounts of hazard and heroism, ...the daring deed, the twist of terror, high and reckless romance, the flirting bout death, the shocker, the mystery". This book is a book about many true stories he collected through his lifetime.

#6 Pageant of Life, Pub. 1941 278 pages. I would call this Pageant of Adventure 2. More incredible stories of man and circumstances.
