The author and photographer Fred W. McDarrah was born in Brooklyn NY. He was a staff photographer for The Village Voice as well as an author. He bought his first camera at the 1939 Worlds Fair for 39 cents, but he didn't start taking photographs as a vocation until he was a paratrooper in occupied Japan following World War II. Back in America, he became famous for documenting the cultural Beat Generation from its inception in the 1950s, as well as the abstract expressionism in New York City during the same time. A long-time resident of the New York City scene, he has photos published in over a dozen books.
