Tiffany Thayer's
MONA LISA
A Fiction in Three Volumes

FIRST EDITION

Some sixteen years ago-when his Three Musketeers was high on the best-seller lists Tiffany Thayer set out to discover what made Mona Lisa smile. Now in this three-volume fiction, he begins to give us his penetrating, and highly illuminating, answer. The result is a book which is unlike any other written in our time. It may remind you of Rabelais, with overtones of The Decline and Fall and War and Peace. It has more than a touch of Don Quixote and it is spiced with the ribald wit of Restoration comedy. No one, absolutely no one but Tiffany Thayer, could have written it, Mona Lisa is a stunning recreation of the most exciting era in all history the Renaissance in Italy at the time when the Kingdom of Naples was ruled by the nymphomaniac Queen Joan buying II. The hero of these three volumes is the Prince of Taranto-a gentleman well-versed in the arts of Power and Love. His Princess, and a stunning one indeed, is Anna Colonna, who displays a naive charm seldom found either in history or fiction. She believes that babies are found beneath cabbages and that prayer works. It does work for her. She also has the refined ability to see and hear only what she wishes to be true-a talent which stands her in very good stead during some of the goings on you will read about in these pages. These goings-on are largely concerned with the efforts of the Prince and his fellow conspirators to take over the rule of Naples from Queen Joan and her conspirators. That running battle generates excitement to a fine pitch of frenzy for the nearly 1400 pages of these books.

Tiffany Thayer is the author of more than a score of books-both fiction and nonfiction-of which the best known are his Thirteen Men, Call Her Savage and One Woman. Mr. Thayer was born in Freeport, Illinois in 1902. Since' then, he has been an actor, newspaper reporter, antiquarian bookseller, Hollywood screen writer, commercial artist, and advertising copy writer.
