buying Blacksmith forged early ax head with original hand made handle. Small sized hand ax with short handle. Early camp ax. Handle shows file markings in the wood and hand working. Ax head marked cast steel, which indicates it was a high grade steel used, but not that the ax head was cast. Ax head was black smith forged and shows uneven forging hammer marks. Old screws and nails were added to handle over time to secure the ax head. There may be an old bondo or weld repair on the pole end above the caste steel letters, but unsure. Rare to still have it's original handle. Ax dates to the mid 1800's, around the civil war period. Older style thin tapered hammer pole. Shows some some heavy use. Came from the Chattanooga, TN area. A very cool looking civil war period camp ax.
